One way of coloring with Gimp.
Step 1 - draw a picture.
Step 2 - ink picture
Step 3 - scan picture
Step 4 - open with gimp
Step 5 - go to, color>brightness and contrast.

Step 5 - go to, color>brightness and contrast.
Step 6 - use the contrast slider, to make the line-work darker. and then de-saturate the picture
Step 7 - go to, color>color to alpha
Step 8 - white to alpha.
Step 9 - make two new layers, and click and drag the layer with your line-work to the top
Step 10 - click on the bottom layer and fill with white.
Step 11 - click on the middle layer. this is the layer you will be adding color to
Step 12 - and then go around with the paint tool adding color. or use the paths tool, to select the area you want to color, and fill with your choice of color.
